The Role of the Oxytocin hormone in building connections

I just finished a great conversation for my podcast with TJ Power, Neuroscientist and co-founder of Neurify, regarding mental health and the role four major chemicals play in balancing our brain chemistry: Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins.

I've been particularly interested in neuroscience recently as an expansion of supporting my own mental health and relationships. On the podcast episode (coming soon), we discuss each of the four in-depth--however, I want to share some learnings about Oxytocin- aka "love hormone."

Oxytocin, or the "love hormone," plays a role in social bonding and attachment. The neurotransmitter's role in human connection starts at childbirth and plays a significant role in the bonding between a mother and child. The hormone is essential to human connection as we go through life.

It's released in response to physical touch through hugging, kissing, and cuddling (also doubles as the "cuddling hormone"). Emotional stimuli also initiate release through feelings of love, trust, and empathy.

Oxytocin boosts feelings of warmth, trust, and well-being for enhanced social bonding and attachment. The increased feelings of human connection and intimacy in relationships of all types help reduce anxiety and stress.

In our digital culture, it's easy to miss out on the benefits of healthily enhancing this hormone.

Here are some ways to naturally enhance oxytocin levels:

Physical Touch
Physical touch, such as hugs, hand-holding, and cuddling, stimulates the release of Oxytocin.

Social Interaction
Spending time with friends and loved ones, participating in group activities, and building meaningful connections all support increased oxytocin levels.

Exercise
Exercise can increase oxytocin levels, especially when completed in a group setting.

Laughter
Laughing with others can also increase oxytocin levels, which helps bond people and promote feelings of human connection.

Oxytocin plays a vital role in promoting human connection and healthy relationships. Take one of these tips and put it into practice today.

In layman's terms, go hug someone.
